Dr Chris Plakiotis is a Consultant in adult and old age psychiatry.
He obtained his medical degree from Monash University and completed basic psychiatric training, as well as advanced training in adult psychiatry and psychiatry of old age, through Monash Health (formerly Southern Health).
Complementing his professional training, Dr Plakiotis has undertaken extensive postgraduate study in Psychological Medicine, Clinical Research, Health Professional Education and Medical Leadership. He has been awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree for a thesis (by publication) titled ‘Electroconvulsive Therapy Research in Psychiatry of Old Age’. He is both a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) as well as an Associate Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators.
In addition to practicing at Healthe Care Australia’s South Eastern Private Hospital and The Valley Private Hospital, Dr Plakiotis is the Unit Head of the Aged Persons Mental Health Service, Monash Health, and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the Department of Psychiatry, Monash University. He teaches medical students, psychiatry trainees and Masters degree students and maintains active research interests in adult and old age psychiatry, as well as medical leadership and management. He has published journal articles, book chapters and book reviews in these fields and presented his research at local and international conferences.
At South Eastern Private Hospital and The Valley Private Hospital, Dr Plakiotis works primarily in acute inpatient and consultation-liaison psychiatry settings to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment for a wide range of mental health conditions affecting adults of all ages.
Dr Plakiotis also works closely with Neuro Trials Victoria, located adjacent to South Eastern Private Hospital, and can thus facilitate the entry of eligible patients into clinical drug trials, particularly in the field of dementia.
